Karpman Cold Fusion Creativity vs. Drama
Cold fusion Is Like A Damsel In Distress
Needing rescue from villains
Where is the knight on the white horse
Or can we come to our own rescue via creativity
This topic of cold fusion that has been such a drama for the past 30 years is in desperate need of some sort of helpful creativity. But to understand the help that will save cold fusion we need to understand the nature of its constant crisis. That nature is a key part of the Atom-Ecology that I find is the metaphor that works best in both the science and psychology of cold fusion.
In 1968 Stephen Karpman came up with a pivotal therapeutic tool called The Karpman Drama Triangle. Karpman’s inspirations came from what we might call human nature. You know all those fairy tales, with the Damsel in Distress, the Villain and the Knight on A White Horse?
These roles are the ones that set up so many of us for disaster when it comes to life, love, and everything? YUP. Karpman saw right through that we humans seem to like to set ourselves up for disappointment and he worked in his field of science, human psychology on how to dis-empower and limiting these psycho shenanigans.
In the Karpman Drama Triangle, the role of Damsel is called, THE VICTIM.
The role of the Villain? THE PERSECUTOR
And that Knight, who swoops in to save the day? THE RESCUER.
The drama triangle is a trap as it lacks creativity.
Whether you are assuming the role of victim, persecutor or rescuer finding oneself in this triangle is a prescription where hope, dreams, and love stay stuck, wither, and die. As 30 years of cold fusion is turning into history we are seeing the death toll mount. I for one regret the passing of too many dear friends and scientific colleagues with whom I have shared witnessing of the dream of cold fusion.
They have passed on with extra sadness as they would have loved to have seen cold fusion become the practical technology that might save this world from the fossil fool age. Save for the presence of plenty of villains it should have become true by now. I keep track of the deaths of the villains and rejoice when I hear of their passing, well perhaps not rejoice but I sure don’t have any regrets for their moving into the underworld of hot fusion.
Many of my cold fusion colleagues have had to live in the role of victims, damsels in distress. Alas it seems to include a lonely life. Few in the field have cultivated that role of victim, rather it has been thrust upon them. Whether it is a lonely death sentence or not that will depend on both the victims and villains.
In this tumultuous and tortured field, many have turned to the dark side and become persecutors. How many out of jealousy of those whose experimental guesses were better than their own is unclear. Plenty have eagerly nurtured their pathological narcissistic villainous nature to show their fealty to masters who demanded they defend the dogma of the competing hot fusion and standard reductionist physics. Some just because their way of dealing with frustration has been to become small-minded and mean spirited in this age of the internet troll one need not look far to find those sorry minions.
As for rescuers, there are some who might act as if that is their role but true rescuers have been few and far between. There have been a number of interlopers from outside those practicing in the field. They step in to fix the field or make it work, these include the true venture capitalist investors but too often the vulture capitalists. Both capitalist inclined rescuers seem to come from the world where making money is more scared than delivering a dream technology that might save the world. One of the most common phrases of a The Rescuer is “If this person did what I said, it would be fixed”.
Is it the destiny of all in the field of cold fusion that we end up the victim. Powerless, hopeless, and stuck in this triangle.
How might we break free?
A corollary triangle was designed by psychologist David Emerald, the Empowerment Triangle, the drama queen roles are replaced by the Creator, Coach, Challenger.
The Victim, becomes the creator, but more than that this new triangle depends on creativity in all of its parts.
The Rescuer might choose to become the coach.
And the Persecutor becomes the challenger…
There is a lesson for those who find themselves inextricably stuck in the cold fusion triangle. We can and must change the ecology and psychology by becoming useful and positive. We can ask ourselves what can we do, no matter what our roles in the Drama. If we see ourselves as a victim we must become creators. In the selfless act of creation, we can make our lives worthwhile. And even if we die before our time we might not die in vain.
Rescuers can become coaches and confidants true partners shared with kindred spirits. If they happen to be fortunate and wealthy enough in money or motivation as investors they will want to participate first and foremost to deliver the cold fusion technologies that will save the world, only secondarily will they be interested in whether that work creates new wealth. Are there people out in the world who might take up this role of rescuer, surely there are countless who have sufficient wealth they could finance cold fusion to delivery and never notice an impact on their wealthy lifestyle. Google might be one if they can figure out how to do a proper topical search on the internet.
As for those now in the role of persecutors. I think they are a mostly hopeless and hapless bunch who will never change. There are clearly some who are employed to ‘catch and kill‘ cold fusion, some of these are well known inside the community but then again they are not interested in the inside that is looking out rather they are trying to prevent the outside from looking in. But these are the people history always passes by. They will not be remembered for long. Some might become enablers by asking proper challenging questions civilized manner an in useful forums of science and industry. The first challenging question they need to ask is, WHAT CAN I DO that will be a positive and helpful contribution?
What cold fusion needs is creativity and participation by people who don’t engage with anger and frustration but work from a place of love and compassion. People who won’t belittle or shame or pointing the finger. If they do their part, cold fusion scientists will do theirs. What can we do to make changes? How can we find and show encouragement to help this vital work grow?
In the Empowerment Dynamic, THE COACH, doesn’t swoop in to sort it all out, but instead helps and supports that person to solve their problems, for themselves. We learn to ask, ourselves and others, powerful questions that bring clarity to the outcome, an clarity to the steps we need to take to make it happen. We seek out people who will not play the role of rescuer in our lives but instead be our coach or teacher. People who help us, help ourselves.
When we are a coach, we approach our lives with feelings of curiosity and empathy. We ask ourselves… What can you do meet people who are more ideal for you? Where do you think they are hanging out? What can I learn from this rejection? How would you feel if your partner said this to you? Would it motivate you? Or make you feel worse about yourself?
And lastly, when we shift the other roles to that of the Challenger and The Coach.. the victim becomes THE CREATOR! We now rise above, break free and create a life of love and happiness.
We become solution orientated. We don’t focus in on the problem and get stuck, we take bold steps towards the outcomes we want in our lives.
We are no longer stuck. No longer powerless. No longer the mere victim to the whims of life. We are an active participant!
AND… drama, fear, anxiety, and hopelessness leave.
